The Second Tuesday Race Forum and The Privilege Institute are pleased to invite you to come to a stimulating conversation on August 9th.

American Dreams and Nightmares: Facing Toxic Masculinity

University of Texas professor Robert Jensen explains that feminism is a gift to men, not a threat.  By understanding the pathology of a system of male dominance, men can not only contribute to a movement seeking justice for women and girls but find ways to escape the corrosive socialization of boys and men.  Jensen will discuss how the normalization of masculinity rooted in domination/subordination that is being modeled and encouraged contributes to multiple and cascading ecological, political, health, inequality, and personal crises.  He will offer an analysis of how we got here and what we can do about it.

Please remember to come into the church from the large parking lot on the north side of the church that is accessible off of Glencoe St, that is just east of the church. The door to the church you should use is the one that opens onto that parking lot. If you have passengers with mobility difficulties, you can pull up to that entrance and then park in the lot or on the street. We will be meeting downstairs in the youth lounge this month. Go down the stairs on the right inside the door, or go acorss the ventibule and take the elevaotor in the short hallway to the lower level.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Many of you have heard that Park Hill United Methodist Church is now a sanctuary location with a family currently seeking refuge there.  Security has been enhanced as we continue to be welcomed to use the building for our meetings.  We can only enter the building from the parking lot where someone will be there to open the door for us.  You may not be able to gain access if you are more than 45 minutes late.

Reports from the White Privilege Conference in Grand Rapids

The theme this year for the White Privilege Conference is “Super People & Super Powers: Prepare to be The Future of Social Justice Work.” Several people from Denver and the Second Tuesday Race Forum are attending the WPC19 conference. They are looking forward to sharing with us in the April meeting some of the most impactful presentations and workshops they attended. We will break into groups to explore in more detail some of the topics. This is a great opportunity for us to gain insights and strategies to deal with the resurgence of white supremacy. We hope that other Denver area residents who attended may be able to join us as well.

Going Beyond Colonization

Jacqueline Keeler, a Navajo/Yankton Dakota Sioux writer, says that one way you can determine if a country is a colony is if it extracts resources from a nation and ships it back to the one percent.  When a people are colonized, there is political domination by the wealthiest, their companies, and their government.  Our discussion will look at ways we can decolonize our minds, the land, the culture, etc.

As we look at both perspectives of the colonizer within and the colonized, it is helpful to consider the words of theologian Howard Thurman: “Don’t ask what the world needs.  Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.  Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

Tools of Mass Distraction

One way to control people is to constantly divert their attention from critical issues and their root causes with a sideshow that is difficult to look away from.  This is true for those of us who are committed to overcoming the white supremacy that is so deeply built into our society.
For the February discussion we encourage you to think of ways that white supremacy affects you personally, and how you can challenge it on a day-to-day basis.  What are the distractions that are designed to keep us from doing the work of personal transformation, of building trust across differences?
